What to remember
- Flat fee and per-deliverable pricing are common for clearly scoped content.
- Retainers can work for ongoing monthly content if the scope is specific.
- Performance pay and gifted collabs need extra caution because the creator may carry more risk.
Common UGC payment models
UGC creators do not have to use one payment model for every brand. The right model depends on whether the brand needs one asset, ongoing content, paid ad testing, affiliate sales, or a low-risk sample collaboration.
A clear deal often separates the creator fee from usage rights and add-ons, even when the brand wants a simple package price.
| Payment model | Best use | Watch closely |
|---|---|---|
| Flat fee | One defined project | Usage length, revisions, and raw footage |
| Per-deliverable | Videos, photos, hooks, or cutdowns | What counts as one deliverable |
| Monthly retainer | Ongoing content volume | Monthly scope and cancellation terms |
| Performance or commission | Affiliate or tracked sales | Base fee, tracking, payout timing |
| Gifted collab | Small test or portfolio sample | No broad usage without payment |
Payment timing and deposits
Payment timing matters because UGC often requires planning, filming, editing, and revisions before final delivery. Many creators use deposits, upfront payment, payment before final files, or clear invoice due dates.
The more unfamiliar the brand is, the more important it is to avoid vague payment promises.
- Confirm whether payment is upfront, split, or due after invoice
- Ask when the invoice is paid and who approves it
- Avoid sending final unwatermarked files before payment if the risk feels high
- Write down payment terms before filming starts
Choose the payment route and currency
A payment model explains why money is owed; a payment rail explains how it moves. Before invoicing, agree the settlement currency, route, timing, and who bears any permitted transfer or conversion costs. Compare the current provider terms for the actual invoice instead of assuming one service is always cheapest.
Check availability, fixed and percentage fees, exchange-rate spread, intermediary costs, dispute or chargeback terms, arrival time, and expected net. UGC Closer records invoices and Business Hub totals in the profile currency; it does not convert or reconcile FX. Never enter a foreign amount as though it were converted. Keep bank account and routing numbers, bank logins, passwords, and one-time codes out of UGC Closer; share sensitive transfer details through a verified secure channel and retain provider or external multi-currency records when needed.
| Payment route | Can be useful for | Check before agreeing |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal | Familiar domestic or international commercial payments | Current transaction, withdrawal, conversion, dispute, and chargeback terms |
| Wise | Supported cross-border or multi-currency transfers | Country and currency availability, conversion, receiving, and transfer fees |
| ACH or local bank transfer | Domestic bank-to-bank settlement | Processing time, bank fees, name or reference requirements, and secure detail exchange |
| International wire | Supported higher-value cross-border invoices | Sender, receiver, intermediary, and FX costs plus the expected net amount |
How to ask about payment professionally
Asking about payment is normal. The strongest message is direct, calm, and tied to process.
Payment clarification message
Before I confirm the project, can you share your payment process and timeline?
For new brand projects, I usually confirm deliverables, usage, revisions, and payment terms in writing before filming.
Once those are clear, I can send the invoice and production timeline.
Common questions
Do UGC creators get paid upfront?
Some do, some use deposits, and some invoice after approval. Creators should be especially careful with new brands and should confirm payment timing before starting work.
Is gifted product a form of payment?
Gifted product has value, but it is not the same as cash payment. It should usually come with a small scope and limited usage unless the brand also pays a fee.
Should I accept commission-only UGC?
Commission-only deals can be risky unless tracking is transparent and the upside is worth it. Many creators prefer a base fee plus performance upside.
Which UGC payment method is best?
There is no universal best method. Compare the provider’s current availability, timing, fees, currency conversion, dispute terms, security, and expected net for the specific invoice, then agree the method and fee responsibility in writing.
