What to remember
- Contracts should define scope, usage, payment, revisions, ownership, and deadlines.
- Broad words like forever, worldwide, all media, and exclusive need careful pricing and review.
- If a term is unclear, ask before signing or starting work.
Terms that deserve a second look
A contract does not need to be complicated to be risky. Sometimes the problem is a missing detail, not a scary legal phrase.
Watch for terms that give the brand more value than the quote covers.
- Perpetual or unlimited usage
- All-media or worldwide rights with no extra fee
- Raw footage included without clear pricing
- Unlimited revisions
- Payment only after vague approval
- Exclusivity with no category, length, or compensation
Payment terms to confirm
A strong contract says when and how you get paid. It should not leave payment entirely dependent on undefined approval or campaign performance unless that is clearly part of the model.
- Invoice date and payment due date
- Deposit or upfront payment when appropriate
- Late payment language
- Kill fee or cancellation policy
- What happens after revisions are requested
How to ask for a contract change
You do not need to sound confrontational. Frame the request around matching the contract to the agreed scope.
Contract clarification reply
I noticed the agreement includes perpetual paid usage and raw footage.
My quote covered 3 months of organic usage for the edited deliverable only.
I can update the quote to include those added rights, or we can revise the agreement to match the original scope.
Common questions
Is perpetual usage always bad?
Not always, but it is valuable. If a brand wants perpetual rights, price it intentionally and understand what you are giving up.
How many revisions should be included?
Many creators include one reasonable revision round. Extra rounds should be defined and priced so the project does not expand endlessly.
Should I sign a contract before payment?
Many projects use contracts before payment, but the agreement should clearly state payment amount, due date, and what triggers payment.
